Situated on a green hill within a quiet Athens suburb, Athens College operates as both a closed educational system and a space open to the public. This dual role shapes its buildings’ function and perception: they must seamlessly integrate into the campus while standing out as autonomous landmarks.
Designing the new arts and exhibition building required balancing these demands. We utilized the site’s natural features—terrain and vegetation—as unifying elements. A prismatic volume emerges from the landscape, with its suspended entrance creating an inviting public space that connects the building to the campus.
To achieve lightness and transparency, we enveloped the structure in a white metal mesh, softening its scale while maintaining a clean, compact form. The result is a landmark that harmonizes with its surroundings, offering both functionality and an artistic identity befitting a university or museum.
